Melgaço's border with Spain explains “Memory and Frontier”. The project is dedicated to the emigration and contraband history that used to be a part of the municipality.
The former municipal slaughterhouse town has transformed into a modern building, whose renovation and expansion took place in 2007. Exhibition tells the story of those who in the decades of 60 and 70 went in search of a better future. A story common to many other small towns in Portugal and Galicia. There is an interesting review of the working and living conditions of these migrants.
Furthermore, same building houses other no less interesting topic: smuggling in the region. As a border area near Melgaço lived for years an intense activity of illegal trade on both sides of the border.
